dear 16-year old self

Dear Che'Lyssa,

My goodness, let me tell you how hard life will get. What? I know you didn't expect me to say something just to make you happy. It's true, life will be hard and you'll have days where you'll feel alone and you'll feel like nothing will ever go your way. You'll have amazing days too. Days when you're so happy all you want to do is sit down, eat ice cream and watch Hallmark movies. That's just half of the amazingness (yes, we make up our own words) you will experience in life.

Now speaking of those bad days... I'm not going to lie, you're going to have days and nights when you feel like giving up, throwing in the towel and leaving it all behind, but there's a way to conquer all of that. And no, it's not doing it alone. I know you've been going to church lately, pay attention a lot more because in those dark times, and even the good times, you're going to need Jesus and He really will be the only one to help you out of your rut. So don't be scared to raise your hand a little higher during worship and don't be scared to let Him in. He loves you more than you'll ever know. When you feel alone, that's who you should call on. He'll be there. Trust me.

In life, there will always be bad days but you'll have a lot more happy days and moments. So much so, you wont be able to contain them. Life is going to get easier and you're going to make it... You will live your dreams and you will do them because you are determined. You're going to get a little side-tracked here and there, but trust me, you're going to make it. You're going to make your parents proud and late at night when everyone is sleeping and the silence gets too loud, you'll have the gut-wrenching feeling of happiness. And when you do, you'll sleep good. Great, actually.

You'll screw up, you'll mess up and you're going to make some gnarly (did we just use this word?) choices that'll blow your mind, but go ahead, make them and deal with those consequences (well, try to hide from dad cause he'll be pissed for a mere second) and then go and learn from them and make better choices next time. Remember, always learn from them. Always. Don't ever give up and don't ever stop chasing those dreams. Your life will not be exactly as you planned, but giving your life to Jesus will probably be the best thing you will ever do and therefore, He's got your plans in his hands. So don't worry, because I know you will worry.

Oh, and another thing... You're going to be obsessed with Borders and One Tree Hill. But be forewarned, the Kindle will be making a debut totally depleting the entire Borders Books and Music store chain therefore leaving you with nowhere to go on lunch breaks or cold, rainy nights in the Fall. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. But of course, that's why you'll have Lucas Scott and everyone in Tree Hill to help mend the Borders shaped hole in your pretty little heart. And honestly, people will judge you for watching that show (every season, four times), but it'll get you through some dry spells, and really, you'll be the ultimate winner in life. So, suck it One Tree Hill haters (yes, they're out there).

So live your life, Che'. Be honest, be kind and be a woman of integrity. Don't back down when life throws you curve balls and don't ever for a second think that you're not beautiful, because you are. Wait, is that conceited since I'm technically saying that to myself? Oh well, it's true... we're beautiful. Inside and out. And when someone tells you that, believe them! Always love and be gentle to those who are really just sensitive, it'll help you in the long run... trust me.

Love,

26-year old you.

PS- Three words: Tom. Fricken. Hiddleston.
